Truestone Develops, Deploys New LAN
for Cutters
The CG Data Distribution System provides message routing on WLM/WLB cutters
CGDDS is the communications interface between MPCMS, ECPINS, and DPS aboard the US Coast Guard's 175-foot Coastal (WLM) and 225-foot Sea-Going (WLB) Buoy Tender Cutters. Systems attached to CGDDS use the NMEA-0183 interface standard sentence structure to exchange data. The core network protocol of CGDDS is Transmission Control Protocol / Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).
Challenge
The Coast Guard was struggling with an un-supportable Survivable Adapter Fiber optic Embedded Network (SAFENet) Local Area Network (LAN) aboard the cutters mentioned above. Truestone's tasks were to (1) quickly provide a proof-of-concept, followed very shortly by a prototype system using modern COTS hardware and custom software components capable of providing the required services, and (2) design, develop, and deploy a fully-engineered solution to its fleet of 175'/225' Buoy Tenders to replace its aging SAFENet LAN.
Solution
Leveraging industry-proven hardware procurement and software engineering processes, Truestone delivered a proof-of-concept in less than six weeks, the success of which led to prototype development, testing, and deployment in less than a year. COTS hardware has been integrated into the system design, along with a mix of COTS and custom software built upon the .NET framework. Because of this system, Electronic Technicians (ETs) aboard these Cutters have monitoring, troubleshooting, and configuration options they've not had before.

Value to the U.S. Coast Guard
Truestone consistently performs beyond expectations. We are always considering the end-user when designing our systems, always thinking "how can this be better?" The result is a system that's easy to understand and therefore easy to use and easy to configure. We "build in" the end-user's ability to scale the system, giving them the tools they need to add/remove components to the system without our assistance.
