Truestone Enables Health Services for 1.5M Federal Workers

As part of the Department of Health and Human Services, Federal Occupational Health (FOH) is the largest provider of Clinical, Employee Assistance and Environmental Health and Safety services to the Federal Government.

FOH's mission is to improve the health, safety and productivity of the Federal workforce. The agency provides clinical services, emergency response, physical exams, immunizations and health risk appraisals.

FOH helps agencies resolve environmental health issues, reduce job-related injuries and eliminate hazardous workplace conditions. The agency also conducts medical surveillance to ensure Federal employees can meet the physical demands of their jobs. Truestone supports FOH's Enterprise Information Technology to provide secure reliable connectivity among the 400 FOH sites around the country to allow access to FOH applications critical to FOH quality healthcare service delivery.

Challenge

To be effective, FOH doctors, nurses, scientists and environmental specialists require 24x7x365 secure access to sensitive patient electronic health records (EHR), tracking systems, and email. In order for clinicians to provide clinical or environmental assistance, it is important for EHRs of FOH employees who travel to remote locations to be securely available in real time.

Solution

As a part of the FOH Business Technology Support (BTS) team, Truestone provides secure and reliable connectivity among the 400 FOH sites around the country to allow access to FOH applications critical to FOH health service delivery. Application development and maintenance, application/technical support for users, infrastructure services, and web development are all operated out of the FOH/BTS location in Seattle, Washington, which Truestone manages. The remote sites consist of Occupational Health Centers (OHC), Employee Assistance Program (EAP) Counselor Sites, Wellness-Fitness Centers, satellite (sub-regional) offices, remote users, and traveling staff are also supported by Truestone. Regardless of which connectivity (broadband, ISP dialup, and/or IPSEC based Virtual Private Networking) and Local Area Network (LAN) requirements each site has, Truestone supports it. Most computers and systems at FOH contain medically sensitive data covered by the Health Information Portability and Privacy Act (HIPAA), Truestone's solution allows the data to be stored and transmitted securely and with no incidents. In addition, Truestone manages the operations and IT infrastructure for FOH. We ensure security, high availability and continuity of operations (COOP) for:

  • 10 regional offices
  • 400 remote health centers
  • 700 private-provider physicians
  • 1,600 users

Truestone provides scientific and engineering support to FOH in support of its initiatives to achieve process and performance improvements. We provide services for requirements gathering, analyses for optimal use of all assets, project definition and project management. Our objective is to make sure that due process is followed, risk is mitigated, the enforcement of system standards occurs, and standard operating procedure for project documentation occurs.

Truestone consistently coordinates and communicates with other FOH project managers to share general knowledge of all existing and planned projects. Our ITIL based Enterprise IT support framework has built-in processes, including change control log, user communications and training guides, manual and automated system monitoring, which allow for future testing needs and a scalable, secure and reliable testing environment.
